How to choose the right probiotics

Jun 19, 2026 Leave a message

Choosing the right probiotics requires attention to strain specificity, live bacteria count, dosage form suitability, and clinical validation data. Key considerations include strain identification number, live bacteria count exceeding 10^8 CFU/g, a dosage form with strong resistance to stomach acid, strains matching specific symptoms, and absence of added allergens.

1. Strain Identification Number

Legitimate probiotic products will display a complete strain identification number, such as Bifidobacterium lactis HN019. This number represents a specific strain that has undergone safety and efficacy validation. Probiotics lacking a identification number may be mixed cultures or unvalidated strains, making efficacy difficult to assess. When purchasing, check against the list of probiotic strains permitted for use in food published by the National Health Commission.

2. Live Bacteria Count

Effective probiotics should have a live bacteria count of 10^8-10^11 CFU/g. The packaging should indicate the minimum live bacteria count within the shelf life, not the factory value. Choosing products using freeze-drying technology or microencapsulation processes better ensures bacterial activity. Check the storage conditions to see if refrigeration is required.

3. Dosage Form Compatibility

Enteric-coated capsules and powders cross the stomach acid environment more easily than tablets. For infants and young children, drops or powders are recommended. Synbiotic preparations combining probiotics and prebiotics can enhance colonization, but dosage forms containing lactose or other allergens should be avoided.

4. Symptom Matching

For diarrhea, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG strain is preferred; for constipation, Bifidobacterium animalis BB-12 is suitable; and for allergic individuals, Bifidobacterium breve M-16V is recommended. Different strains have specific effects on gut microbiota regulation; multi-strain products should not be chosen blindly.

5. Certification and Qualification

Check the packaging for GMP certification, FDA GRAS certification, or the domestic blue hat logo for health food. Imported products must have Chinese labels indicating the source of the strains; avoid purchasing OEM products without manufacturer information.

When supplementing with probiotics, avoid taking them concurrently with antibiotics. The water temperature should not exceed 40℃. It is recommended to prioritize strains that have undergone clinical trials for your specific symptoms and observe improvements in bloating, bowel movements, etc., after taking the probiotics. Store in a cool, dry place away from light and moisture. Use within the specified time after opening. If you experience any discomfort such as a rash or worsening diarrhea, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor.
