PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Bifidobacterium longum HH-BL18 is a Gram-positive, catalase-negative, rod-shaped bacterium present in the human gastrointestinal tract and one of the 32 species that belong to the genus Bifidobacterium. It is a microaerotolerant anaerobe and considered to be one of the earliest colonizers of the gastrointestinal tract of infants. When grown on general anaerobic medium, B. longum forms white, glossy colonies with a convex shape. B. longum is non-pathogenic and is often added to food products.

ACID TOLERANCE

Acid resistance of Bifidobacterium longum HH-BL18 powder was carried out at either pH=2.0 and pH=3.0 for up to 4 hours. The microbial enumeration of Bifidobacterium longum HH-BL18 should be performed no more frequently than at the initial(as control), 1 hour, 2 hour, and 4 hour time points. The Fig 1 illustrates that Bifidobacterium longum HH-BL18 can survive at low pH conditions, which means this strain has good acid resistance.

BILE SALT TOLERANCE

Bile salt resistance of Bifidobacterium longum HH-BL18 powder was carried out at either 0.2% and 0.3% bile salt for up to 4 hours. The microbial enumeration of Bifidobacterium longum HH-BL18 should be performed no more frequently than at the initial(as control), 1 hour, 2 hour, and 4 hour time points. The Fig 2 illustrates that Bifidobacterium longum HH-BL18 can survive at high concentration of bile salt, which means this strain has good bile salt resistance.

STORAGE STABILITY

Bifidobacterium longum HH-BL18 powder were sealed in aluminum foil bag, maintained at -18℃ for 24 months for long-term stability test. The microbial enumeration of Bifidobacterium longum HH-BL18 should be performed no more frequently than at the initial, 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24 month time points. According to Fig 3, the potency of Bifidobacterium longum HH-BL18 powder was 1.51×10¹¹CFU/g. After a storage period of 24 months, the potency of the powder was 1.15×10¹¹CFU/g. It means that this strain can remain stable for long time if stored at low temperature.

HEALTH BENEFITS

1. Relieve constipation

Short-chain fatty acids(SCFAs) are a subset of fatty acids that are produced by the gut microbiota during the fermentation of partially and nondigestible polysaccharides. SCFAs may induce propulsive contractions, leading to accelerated transit and relief of constipation. In the experiment(Fig 4), we found that the SCFAs level were much higher in fecal samples collected from people with probiotic treatment (Bifidobacterium longum HH-BL18).

2. Balance gut microbiota

In a human experiment(Fig 5), we found that the oral intake of B.longum HH-BL18 may improve the microbial pattern in gut dysbiosis by increasing the level of good bacteira and decreasing the level of bad bacteria.
