10 Myths About Probiotics — Myth 6: The more live bacteria, the better the probiotic effect

Nov 18, 2025 Leave a message

The health benefits of probiotics are not only related to the strains used but also closely linked to the dosage. Scientific research shows that probiotics can only colonize, multiply, and exert regulatory effects in the gut when consumed in sufficient amounts. This allows them to improve gut microbiota, promote digestion and nutrient absorption, or enhance immunity. However, the effective dose varies depending on the strain. For example, some strains may produce positive effects at a daily intake of just a few hundred million live cells, while others require higher amounts to achieve noticeable benefits.

Myth 6 The more live bacteria the better the probiotic effect

For the same strain, within a certain range, a higher dose is generally more likely to produce significant health benefits than a lower dose. However, this does not mean that "more is always better." Exceeding the recommended dose will not continuously enhance the effect and may even lead to waste or, in some cases, increase the risk of gastrointestinal discomfort.

Moreover, because different strains have distinct characteristics and mechanisms of action, simply comparing the number of live cells in a product does not indicate its overall efficacy. A more scientific way to evaluate probiotic effectiveness is to refer to clinical evidence supporting the specific strain, rather than just the quantity. When choosing products, consumers should focus on strains with clinical research data and authoritative certification, selecting those suited to their individual needs instead of blindly pursuing high doses or sheer numbers of live bacteria.
